Veganism is awesome, no doubt. Though, it does add an extra layer of complexity to traveling (especially when you don't know the language of the country you're visiting). Whether travelling to a foreign country or taking a cross-country road trip, we all have been in the situation where we feel limited with our food options. Hopefully, this blog post will provide you with some guiding resources for your next adventure! 1. VegVisitsMost of us understand the struggle of not having a kitchen while traveling. Until Airbnb came along, your accommodation rarely came with a kitchen leaving you having to eat out for every meal. As a vegan, this can leave you with a shortage of healthy options. Luckily, new ideas to solve this problem are sprouting. VegVisits is the Airbnb of the vegan world. The website allows you to find local vegan hosts across 80 countries. It operates similar to Airbnb, except.. well... vegan! You can rent a room, the whole house or even just a kitchen for a few hours. Having vegan hosts will ensure that you find the best vegan and vegetarian restaurants, markets, nature spots, local attractions and more. This service was created by vegans for vegans. 2. HappyCowThis might be a no brainer for longtime vegans but HappyCow can be your saving grace while traveling. HappyCow serves as your personal food guide, allowing you to find the best veggie options near you. How it works: First, enter your location. Second, filter what you're looking for (shops, restaurants, bakery, services, etc). Lastly, find the highest rated options in your area and eat away! The application costs around $4 on IOS but you can always use the website for free. 3. MeetUpIf you are solo-traveling or just looking to make some new friends, MeetUp can be a helpful resource. MeetUp is a service that brings together people with similar interests. The groups then create events which are available to the public. Click on “Explore”, type in “Vegan” and you’ll find a plethora of upcoming events in your area. 4. Google TranslateThe days of stress-learning the phrases you need to know in a different language are over. Although Google Translate isn’t a perfect translation, it has become a marvellous free tool for travelers. You can have a conversation with someone who speaks a different language by using the “conversation” feature. This tool transcribes and translates your speech into the language of whomever you're speaking with. The app also has the ability to translate text from photos into your native language. Meaning you can take a photo of foreign ingredients on a package and it will translate it for you. Technology is cool. 5. VeganagogoIf you’re more interested in having a pocketbook full of vegan-related phrases in over 50 languages, Veganagogo is the app for you. The phrases have been curated for your specific dining needs and professionally translated so you can speak with confidence when ordering your food. 6. Vegan XpressThis one is more for those living or travelling in the USA. Vegan Xpress give you an on-the-run guide to vegan food options at fast food and chain restaurants. It’s quite handy for those good ol’ american summer road-trips. 7. AirVeganHow much time have you spent aimlessly walking around the airport looking for something to eat? If you're a vegan traveler, my guess is a lot. Luckily there is a new app on the market called AirVegan. This is an app that rates how vegan-friendly an airport is and tells you where to go to get the best vegan food within the airport. No more frantically running around looking for food between layovers, heck yeah! The app is new and primarily works for US airports, but they will be expanding globally in the near future. Honorable Mention: VegannectionTechnically this isn’t an app, but it’s worth a mention.
