- Overview -
WE'RE OFF TO BOTSWANA AND CAPE TOWN!For many, a safari holiday is one of those trips we start dreaming about in our childhood. And then to have a 100% vegan safari trip, well, that's just a pipe dream...
Dream no more! This is the trip you've been dreaming of! We're off to Africa to visit with animals in complete nature and do it in style! And we get to welcome the New Year amongst the animals. And we have our very own professional wildlife photographer to help us all with our pictures... and even take some for us! How cool is that! Our trip starts in gorgeous Cape Town, with a welcome dinner/feast to remember. We recommend arriving a few days early to not only take care of jet-lag, but also to take in the wonderful sights on offer in this world-class city. Next up, we fly into Botswana, an absolute animal-lover's paradise. We'll visit with lions, elephants, giraffes, hippos, birds, the list goes on -- all doing their own thing in their natural habitat, and thanks to Botswana's quality-over-quantity approach to tourism, we won't be encountering the crowds and zoo-like atmosphere of other countries in the region. The best way to view all of these animals on their own turf is to go and stay where they live, and that's exactly what we'll do. We're taking over 2 luxurious and remote camps, and getting there by small bush-planes. It's the stuff dreams are made of. You'll be spending your mornings and afternoon on blissful safaris, returning each time to our deluxe camps for 100% plant-based meals and snacks, with plenty of free time to relax with a book and a glass of wine and maybe even a swim. Your nights will start with a drink by the campfire before going to sleep amongst the sounds of nighttime animal activity. We've opted to stay 3 nights in each camp to ensure you have enough time to enjoy the surroundings and not constantly rush from one activity to the other. Certain to be one of the best New Year's Eve of your life, we get to welcome 2021 in style at our first camp, with a party, drinks and food worthy of the occasion. After 6 nights on safari, we'll celebrate the fact we saw lions (!!) with a 2-night stay in South Africa's quaint town of Greyton. Here we'll explore the charming one-street town, visit an extraordinary farm sanctuary, and toast to our adventures at a local winery. Tough life! So lace up those hiking boots, charge those camera batteries, order the best binoculars you can afford, dust off that safari hat you've always wanted to wear, and join us on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure to one of the best wildlife spotting place on earth. Botswana, Cape Town, here we come! This is a CPG CURATED TRIP, which means that, while Colleen will not be present during this trip, she was heavily involved in the planning of the trip's itinerary, its activities, accommodation and meals. |
MEET JENNIFER HADLEY, WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHER
The following is now included in your trip's fee:
Prior to traveling the world and capturing stunning images of animals in their natural habitat, breathtaking landscapes, and the dynamic cultures which make up this beautiful planet, Jennifer had a successful career in corporate finance. She has always enjoyed photography but her passion for wildlife led her to realize that she could share these animals and their plight with a broader audience and convince people that they are worth fighting for. Her love for travel and taking the less beaten path lends itself perfectly to photographing wildlife, many of whom are on the brink of extinction. Her photographs take us to faraway places and her stories remind us of the fragility of the dwindling habitats for animals, the humans who fight to save them, and the hope that remains if we work together. Jennifer lives in Raleigh, NC with her husband, two kids, 4 dogs and 7 cats. You can see her work on her Instagram site.

We're hoping to whet your appetite (pun definitely intended!) with the itinerary below, but please note that sometimes things do and can change.... especially in Africa. We've tried to be as specific as we can down below, but please allow us some leeway for small activity and meal changes. If we have to change anything, rest assured it will be for the best! The itinerary is therefore subject to change, especially if we find an experience that we believe would make the trip even better.
DAY 1: ARRIVAL - CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA
DECEMBER 28th, 2021
Welcome to South Africa! Our adventure begins in beautiful Cape Town. Your trip includes an airport pickup, regardless of what day or what time you arrive. If you arrive one or more days before the trip and decide to stay in your own accommodation, no worries -- we'll drive you there too!
There are no planned activities during the day, up until our first meeting (at around 3pm -- we'll reconfirm a few months before the trip), where you'll first get to meet your tour leaders and fellow travelers. A few glasses of bubbly and all-around introductions later, and we're off to our first dinner.
It's a World Vegan Travel tradition by now that our first meal together is often an event in itself. You shouldn't expect anything less this time around. Oh, and make sure to come hungry ;)
Once we're all fed, we'll head back to our hotel for an "early" night. We're off on an adventure tomorrow!

DAY 2: CAMP MOREMI - MOREMI GAME RESERVE, BOTSWANA
DECEMBER 29th, 2021
Today is a day of travel. After our vegan breakfast, we'll pack up our bags and head to Cape Town airport for our 2h45 flight to Maun, Botswana.
Of important note: while in Botswana, we will be taking small planes in order to reach our remote bush accommodation. As such, the following luggage restrictions are strictly enforced:
If your bag is bigger/heavier than this, it may be left behind in our partner's Maun office. You'll be able to retrieve them later, when we're flying back to Cape Town on day 8.
Back to our trip: once in Maun, we'll transfer over to our small planes which will take us to our 1st camp. The flight time will be around 20 minutes. Depending on the day, we may be on an 8 or 13-person plane. We will therefore need a few planes, and the group as a whole will therefore get to the camps at slightly different times.
Our first camp is located in the Moremi Game Reserve. Situated on the fringe of the watery Okavango Delta, Moremi is home to some of Africa's densest population of wildlife. The habitats here range from woodland and thorn scrub to dry savannah, grassland and floodplain. There are also permanent waterways, lagoons and islands. Since the reintroduction of rhinos, it's now home to the big five, and notably Africa's largest population of lechwe. The reserve also protects one of the largest remaining population of endangered African wild dogs. If you're a bird enthusiast, you'll find yourself in heaven. Birding here is incredibly varied and rich, and it's arguably the best place in Africa to view the rare and secretive Pel's fishing owl.
Our home for the next 3 nights is the Camp Moremi, a wonderful introduction to Botswana safari life. One of the area's oldest permanent camp, it was completely rebuilt in early 2019. It now features amazingly comfortable and deluxe rooms, and incredible public areas such as a swimming pool and campfire pit. Wildlife is at its doorstep. In fact, on a recent visit to the camps by the World Vegan Travel team, there was a hippo (affectionately named Oscar by the staff) who visited daily, and an army of baboons constantly keeping the staff busy by trying to raid the kitchen!
Depending on our time of arrival today -- which is only confirmed a few weeks before our arrival as it's tied to the bush plane schedules -- we may have time for a safari drive before dinner. We also have 2 more full days to explore this awesome region, so settle in, unpack your bags, grab a cold beer, enjoy a sunset by the campfire and get hungry for our first vegan dinner surrounded by the sounds of the African bush!
Seriously: can life get any better than this?

DAY 3: CAMP MOREMI - MOREMI GAME RESERVE, BOTSWANA
DECEMBER 30th, 2021
Waking up in the heart of Africa is something that can only be experienced. And experienced early!
We set off at the crack of dawn. That's when the animals are at their most active! Following a light vegan breakfast, you'll head off on your first safari activity. This could be either boarding your 4x4 vehicles and heading out into the bush, or boarding the camp's motorized boat for a journey down waterways and lagoons. Whatever you choose, you'll be taken along by our expert local guides who can truly answer any questions you may come up with. Seriously, we've never been able to stump them! They are a walking Wikipedia/Google page!
If you prefer to sleep in, no worries at all! We have 2 full days at this location and you can build your own adventure. Your tour leaders will be on-hand to help out with any decision-making tips.
The morning activity will lead to lunch and an afternoon rest period where you can enjoy your room or go for a swim in the camp's own swimming pool!
Once the midday heat subsides a bit, the animals will start getting active again, and so we're off on another safari activity. This is the perfect time to sit back and watch some lions nap or stroll about with a glass of wine in-hand.
We'll be back at the lodge in time for sun-downer drinks, maybe a campfire if the weather cooperates, and a dinner under the stars.
Below is an example of a daily schedule, though please note that it serves only as an example. The daily program is flexible based on the guests' interests, travel times and availability of activities.

DAY 4: CAMP MOREMI - MOREMI GAME RESERVE, BOTSWANA
DECEMBER 31st, 2021
While it's easy to say that today is just more of the same -- we're off on safari activities again -- the truth is that no 2 safaris are ever the same. Some animals are more elusive than others, and the odds to spot them increase with every outing.
Of course you are free to join a morning or afternoon activity, or both, or simply stay back at the camp and enjoy your surroundings. Our camp has a great viewing deck, and so does your room! It's the perfect place to sit back with a book and some tea and try to spot animals right from your own private veranda!
This is our last night in the Moremi Game Reserve, and the very last night of 2020! Tonight is party time, as we welcome the new year in style, as we eat, dance and toast to a very happy new year indeed!

DAY 5: CAMP SAVUTE - CHOBE NATIONAL PARK, BOTSWANA
JANUARY 1st, 2022
Today we leave the Moremi Game Reserve behind and board our small plane for the 25-minute flight to our next home for the next 3 nights.
Savute Safari Lodge is located in Chobe National Park, Botswana's first national park and also the most biologically diverse. Located in the north of the country, it is Botswana's third largest park and has one of the greatest concentrations of animals in all of Africa. The park is widely known for its large elephant population, estimated to be around 50,000. Elephants living here are Kalahari elephants, the largest in size of all known elephant populations. They are characterized by rather brittle ivory and short tusks. If this wasn't spectacular enough, the park is also noted for having a population of lions which has been known to actually prey on African elephants, mostly juveniles or sub-adults, but occasionally fully-grown adults!
Our camp is located in the Savute marsh region, renowned for its intense predator encounters and exceptional animal viewing. The camp is located right by a watering hole, where many animals -- including elephants!!!! -- come for a drink. Perhaps some will join us for sun-downers?
Depending on our time of arrival today, we may only have time for a safari drive on the way to the lodge, and perhaps a short one before dinner. No worries -- we have 2 more full days to explore this awesome region, so settle in, unpack your bags, grab a cold beer, enjoy a sunset by the campfire and get hungry for our first vegan dinner surrounded by the sounds of the African bush!

JANUARY 5th, 2022
We begin our morning with yet another delicious breakfast. You will also have a bit of time to walk around town and explore some of its shops and galleries.
We're then off on a 15-minute drive to the amazing Greyton Farm Animal Sanctuary. Situated over 40 hectares of private farm, the sanctuary was founded by Nicola Vernon in 2014, and is now the forever home to some 90 pigs, 30 sheeps, and a few goats, geese, chickens, dogs, cats and even a duck!
Our lunch today will be at a nearby winery, where we'll also indulge in some wine tasting and some walks around the gorgeous property. This is a great way to enjoy our last day together in Africa.
Our last dinner, back on the beautiful grounds of our hotel, will be the chance to say goodbye to each other, share some photos, friending ourselves on Facebook, and toast to a successful trip.. and hopefully to the next one!

JANUARY 6th, 2022

CANCELLATION POLICY
Since this is a confirmed trip, the 1000$ sign-up fee is non-refundable as we must forward payments for accommodation, transportation, suppliers, etc. In the event that there's a need to cancel the trip (ie covid19 reasons, natural disaster, human conflict, etc), the sign-up fee (only) will be refunded, minus processing fees. This applies to bookings completed after July 23rd, 2020 only.
Understandably, things are not exactly clear due to the current Covid-19 pandemic. We are in constant touch with our on-the-ground partners and suppliers and hope that come September/October (but could be early November) we will be have a clearer view as to the trip's go-ahead status. As such, we will not be asking for any further payments until September or October, once the current covid-related situation becomes clearer.
Refund of your sign-up fee will only apply if we cancel the trip. Our policy is to not run a trip if Covid-19 imposes too many restrictions for the enjoyment of the trip, such as:
If the trip does go ahead (ie none of the above apply) and you are unable to attend the trip for any personal reasons related to covid-19 (ie your own country changes its policy, you contract the virus, etc), there is unfortunately no refund. Again, the trip needs to be canceled by us because we find it can not run in accordance with our high standards of quality. The above only applies to new sign-ups, from July 23rd, 2020.
Do note that if our destination countries (Botswana and South Africa) are opened and flights are operating as per normal, the trip will go ahead and our payment & cancellation policy will take effect.
Subsequent payments are non-refundable once made. We cannot promise full refunds should the trip be canceled for reasons out of our control (ie natural disaster, pandemics, human conflicts, etc). We do try to get as much as possible back to you, but cannot guarantee anything as every situation is unique and dependent on what we can negotiate with our local partners and suppliers.
As such, it is highly recommended that you purchase trip insurance when you sign up for our trips!
Should you need to cancel for any reason, we will offer your spot to the first person(s) on the waiting list. If we are able to fill your spot, we will refund all payments made, minus processing fees. Having said that, do note that there is no guarantee we will be able to fill up your spot.
Arriving late or leaving a trip in progress will not result in a refund, and no refunds will be made for any unused portion of the trip.

IMPORTANT NOTES
TRAVEL MEDICAL INSURANCE - MANDATORY
This is both a World Vegan Travel and a Botswana requirement. You will need to provide a policy and emergency contact number in order to join the trip. This can be done just prior to the trip's date.
Trip Insurance (ie. covering your flight tickets, luggage, etc.) is definitely recommended as well, but not mandatory.
ITINERARY
The itinerary is therefore subject to change, especially if we find an experience that we believe would make the trip even better.
LUGGAGE RESTRICTION
While in Botswana, we will be taking small planes in order to reach our remote bush accommodation. As such, the following luggage restrictions are strictly enforced:
20kg / 44lbs per person (total weight inclusive of luggage and hand luggage/camera equipment)
soft sided luggage, non-rigid bag
max dimensions: 25cm wide x 45cm high x 62cm long (10 inches wide x 18 inches high x 24 inches long)
if your luggage has wheels, please ensure that the frame supporting the wheels at the back is not a rigid/solid frame
If your bags are bigger/heavier than this, they may be left behind in our partner's Maun office. You'll be able to retrieve them later, when we're flying back to Cape Town on day 8.

TOUR PRICE REASONING
We do realize that this is quite an expensive trip. However, when compared to many other tours to the region, we are actually comparatively priced when you take into accounts that our trips include all meals (and vegan to boot!) and drinks, all the tips for drivers, guides and camp staff (this does add up!), extras like a gift/essentials bag and free laundry (in Botswana), and the support of 2 full time tour leaders (most tours have only one).
Still, there are a few important reasons to point out on why the cost is high:
Still, there are a few important reasons to point out on why the cost is high:
- Our visit coincides with New Year's Eve, which increases camp costs
- Botswana has opted for a high-price, low numbers formula, in part as a conservation strategy. This means it limits its number of remote lodges and camps, as well as the actual amount of rooms in each accommodation. While this helps enormously in limiting the number of vehicles driving around and potentially bothering the animals (which is a good thing!!), the small numbers do translate to exclusivity, which in turn translates to a higher overall cost for accommodation , meals, and so on.
- The remoteness of our camps means we have to take a series of domestic chartered bush-planes... which come with a cost!
- We realize that for many, this will be their first trip to Africa, and/or their first safari. It's something most of us have dreamt about all our lives. As such, we've constructed an itinerary that truly makes this the adventure of a lifetime in regards to our accommodation (deluxe) and choice of activities.
- This may well be the only vegan tour to both countries, and our cost does factor in the lengthy and hard work done with all our camps, hotels and restaurants in preparing for our visit (meals, advocacy, toiletries, etc), which is far beyond any tasks that other tour companies are faced with.
WHAT ARE CPG CURATED TRIPS?
CPG Curated Trips are real CPG VEGAN TRIPS but without Colleen Patrick-Goudreau there herself. Colleen has helped organize and set up this trip, and experienced it along with a full group beforehand, and therefore ensures that all these trips are 100% up to her (very!!!) high standards. They are all 100% CPG-approved! Furthermore, most (if not all) of the other travelers in your group will be Colleen's followers & fans.
CAN I SIGN UP AS A SINGLE TRAVELER?
Absolutely! We have many people on our trip that sign up as singles. However, due to our new COVID-19 policy we are no longer offering shared-room options and therefore only a few single rooms are available, which also incur a single supplement fee. Please see our COST & SIGN-UP section for more information.
FLIGHTS, VISAS & VACCINATION
FLIGHTS
You are in charge of your own flights to and from our starting city. We ask that you try and arrive early on the first day, as our first meeting tends to be around 3pm. This exact time will be confirmed at a later date.
Even better is arriving one or more days before. This would provide you with a chance to take care of jet-lag and visit the town. Once the trip starts. We can book your a room in our trip's hotel if you'd like. We will be sending out the cost for this once the trip is confirmed.
Regardless of your arrival date, we will provide an airport pickup.
Please note that check-ins at our hotel are not guaranteed BEFORE 3PM. We will try and have the hotel accommodate early arrivals, but it's possible you will be asked to wait until a room becomes available. We are situated right downtown, so worst case it's nice and exciting to go and explore the neighborhood!
VISAS
For most citizens of European and western countries (ie USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etc), no visas are necessary for South Africa and Botswana.
VACCINATIONS
There are no mandatory vaccinations required for South Africa and Botswana, and the final decision is entirely up to you. Please inquire directly with your doctor when making your decision.
Having said that, and according to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, the following vaccinations are recommended for Botswana: hepatitis A, hepatitis B, rabies and typhoid, and boosters for tetanus, diphteria and measles. Yellow Fever is not a risk in the region, but the certificate is an entry requirement if you're coming from an infected region.
Botswana is a malaria risk area, and you may choose to take anti-malaria medication. Once again, please consult your doctor in this regard.
Our included stay in South Africa include Cape Town and Franschhoek, both somewhat urban areas, and therefore very little risk is posed in terms of disease and malaria/dengue. If you plan on extending your holidays and visit more rural areas, or a National Park, it could be a good idea to get proper vaccination.

DO I NEED INSURANCE?
Yes, you will need medical travel insurance. This is not only a requirement from World Vegan Travel, but also from Botswana. The camps need to know that you are fully covered in the event of a medical emergency, including repatriation. You will need to send us your policy detail and emergency contact number before the trip's start date.
CAN YOU HELP WITH BOOKING OUR FLIGHTS AND ONGOING TRAVEL?
As we are not a travel agency or booking agents, we can't book any flights or ongoing travel (ie hotels, transportation, etc) for you. However we can surely help with recommendations, suggestions and tips as you look into flights, or extending your holiday. It never hurts to ask, so don't hesitate to contact us with any queries whatsoever!
WHAT WILL THE WEATHER BE LIKE?
Being in the southern hemisphere, December means it's summer in both Botswana and Cape Town.
In Botswana, this also means we're in the rainy season, though this usually translates to only a few scattered showers and for a short time each. The rains do mean that temperatures can cool down a bit, but you should expect days in the mid 30°C (85-95°F), often dropping to to around 20°C (65°F) at night. The parks do tend to be lush, and the watering holes are usually well frequented ;) The clear atmosphere and rain clouds make for excellent photographs, and as vegetation starts to recover and grazing land becoming more plentiful, this translates to new-born calves... and intensified predator activity.
In Cape Town, you can expect the average high temperature to hit 25°C (77°F) in the daytime, and the average overall temperature to be a pleasant 20°C (68°F). December marks the beginning of the summer season, and the days should be glorious with little precipitation and plenty of bright sunlight.

WHAT SHOULD I PACK?
First and foremost, please be aware that due to our taking small bush-planes in Botswana, there is a strict luggage restriction in place.
You should view this as a good chance to practice minimal packing, and please note that laundry is included at our Botswana camps, so you should focus on bringing 2 sets of clothes and rotate them each day. Wear one set as the other gets cleaned!
In terms of clothing, it's a good idea to bring some summer garb, such as shorts, t-shirts, etc. And a swimsuit, as we will have swimming pools at our accommodation.
On safari, long and light cotton pants and shirts are a good idea, to block both the sun and (hopefully!) pesky mosquito. A hat is a good idea to block off the sun... and it looks cool in photos ;)
Do bring some comfortable, but sturdy, shoes, especially if you intend on taking a guided bush walk. Overall we're not going on any big hikes, so there's no need to bring your best pair of hiking boots. Bring something comfortable to wear in the evening, both in terms of clothing and footwear, as we relax at our camps, either by the campfire or on the decks with a cocktail in hand.
Sunglasses are a must, and it's highly recommended to bring some good binoculars. Both the camps and your tour leaders will carry spear binoculars, but it's always nice to have your own.
Other essentials should include:
We will be sending an info packet several weeks before the trip that will include, amongst other bits of information, a packing list.
- 20kg / 44lbs per person (total weight inclusive of luggage and hand luggage/camera equipment)
- soft sided luggage, non-rigid bag
- max dimensions: 25cm wide x 45cm high x 62cm long (10 inches wide x 18 inches high x 24 inches long)

WHAT IF I REALLY NEED TO BRING MORE THINGS THAN WILL FIT IN THE LIMITED LUGGAGE ALLOWANCE?
In the event that your luggage is bigger than what's allowed on the bush planes, you will have 2 options:
- leave your luggage at our partner's storage facilities at their Maun office (at no additional charge). You will recuperate your luggage on our way out of Botswana (day 8).
- you can pre-book and make arrangements for transport, storage and delivery from Maun to our camps using a third-party road
courier company. Charges will depend on final luggage weight. The costs below can be used as an estimate on transport charges using the courier services:
- 5kg-10kg: 25$
- 10kg-15kg: 30$
- 15kg-20kg: 40$
- 20kg-25kg: 50$
WILL THERE BE INTERNET ACCESS DURING THE TRIP?
In Botswana: due to the remoteness, there is no WIFI. Internet access will be limited to using the camp's computer in the public area/library. Do note that usually there is only 1-2 computers to be shared amongst the entire group, so please be mindful of this and use the computer in short sessions only. Also note that the internet speeds will be quite slow, so you should use the computers to check email and social media, but certainly not for any kind of streaming, or posting large-sized photos, etc.
In South Africa, we will have full WIFI internet at our accommodation as well as on our busses.
In South Africa, we will have full WIFI internet at our accommodation as well as on our busses.
HOW MUCH MONEY SHOULD I BRING?
Overall, this is an all-inclusive trip and you shouldn't need a huge amount of extra funds. In Botswana, the only possible extra expenses would be for any premium alcoholic drinks and souvenirs at our camps' curio shops. They do accept credit cards if you prefer to not carry any cash. If you would like to give extra tips to the guides and camp staff, do bring some small denomination currency, though please note that we have included tips already in the tour costs.
In South Africa, you will need to cater for yourself on day 1 until we meet in the afternoon, and again on our last day, especially if you choose to stay in Africa for a longer time. Franschhoek is a great place to pick up souvenirs, but credit cards are widely accepted and ATMs are easy to find.
Overall it's a good idea to have some emergency cash (preferably in euros or US dollars) but otherwise you should be fine with using only credit cards and bank cards.

I HAVE A DIETARY RESTRICTION (ALLERGIES, GLUTEN-FREE, ETC)
This is generally not a problem, but we do need to be informed at the time of booking so we may prepare the meals accordingly. Please be as precise and detailed as possible. Once on the trip, it is difficult and/or not possible to change our meal plans.
HOW MUCH FREE TIME WILL I HAVE?
In Botswana, each day is made up of 1 morning activity, and one late afternoon activity. You can choose to join the activities or remain behind and enjoy your room. That's entirely up to you!
In South Africa: we will have the afternoon of day 9 free, so you can choose to explore the town, go for a hike in the hills or hang out at the hotel's beautiful grounds and pool.

HOW MUCH PHYSICAL ACTIVITY CAN I EXPECT?
In terms of included activities, very little is physical. This truly is a relaxing trip! We do have a guided bush walk at Camp Okavango, but this is very easy, on flat ground, and entirely optional so you can opt out if you wish. Otherwise we're mostly being driven around by 4x4 or boat and as long as you don't get motion sickness, you should be fine!
We are taking a total of 5 flights so you should be able to carry your luggage to/from the plane/bus, etc. The luggage restriction does help in this matter, ensuring your bag will be small-ish and no heavier than 20kg.

IS THERE AN AGE LIMIT TO JOIN THE TRIP?
Youth above 16 years young are welcome. We are currently not accepting any younger children.
There is no limit at the other end, as long as you can carry your own luggage and handle the drives and flights.

HOW SAFE ARE SOUTH AFRICA AND BOTSWANA?
Botswana is one of the safest countries in Africa, though this really is only of concern in cities, which we will not be visiting. We will be staying in the heart of the country, surrounded by all kinds of animals, big and small, including a large amount of predators. However our camps are very safe and secure, with small fences around and a very knowledgeable staff, who do patrol and make sure that no animals come too close. While on safari, there's a good chance you will get quite close to lions and other predators, but overall they seem completely uninterested in us humans... which is a good thing! Your guides will try to stay somewhat at a longer distance to larger mammals such as elephants, buffalos and hippos. They are the expert and emphasize safety over anything else. They will never take unnecessary risks.
South Africa has its fair amount of crime but the downtown area of Cape Town where we will be staying, as well as Greyton and surrounding area, are all quite safe. In Cape Town, using common sense and sticking to well trafficked areas will ensure you have a very safe trip. On the tour, we will be visiting as a large group of ~24 or so, with safety at the top of our list, so there is nothing to worry about.

South Africa has 11 (!!!) official languages, with some spoken more than others. While English is recognized as the language of commerce and science, it's actually ranked fourth and the first language of only 9.6% of South Africans! Still, it remains the de facto lingua franca of the nation, and you should have no problem getting yourself understood in Cape Town and Franshhoek.
In Botswana, English is an official language as well, which means all our guides and camp staff will speak it perfectly. The other official language is Setswana, which is widely spoken across the country. There are several other prevalent languages spoken by minority groups.

LGBTQ TRAVELLERS
In Bostwana: While there are technically laws against homosexuality, they are unenforced and Botswana is among the most tolerant of African nations for the LGBTQ community. You should still refrain from too much public display of affection, but as we will be in our own remote camps, and the staff are used to hosting many travelers from around the world, you don't need to be completely reserved.
South Africa is the first and only African nation where the government recognizes same-sex relationships and homosexual marriages are recognized by law. Displays of affection may generate unwelcome attention though they should be tolerated and respected, especially in the areas we will visit (Cape Town and Franshhoek).
